B.A. English Literature and History Full-time

The following must be taken:

LI Topics in History 09 39689 20 Semester 2

The University’s Enhanced Curriculum Framework permits students registered to Joint degrees to vary their credit weighting in their second and final year. A minimum of 40 credits and a maximum of 80 credits must be taken in each discipline in both years (subject to a total number of 120 credits in each year). Students who complete less than 160 credits in one of their disciplines will graduate with a major/minor degree.

Students choose 100 credits of optional modules.

Students must take a minimum of 40-credits in History and a minimum of 40-credits in English Language.

All students must take ONE 20-credit History option in Semester 1 from List A in addition to the compulsory LI module Topics in History in Semester 2.

Students taking 60 or 80-credits in either department may replace 20-credits with ONE 20-credit Future or Professional Skills module. Only one Skills module may be taken.

Students must take 60-credits in each semester.

All optional lists are indicative; not all modules will run

Students taking 80 credits in History and 40 credits in English Literature

History: Students will choose ONE 20cr option in Semester 1 from History List A PLUS EITHER History in Theory in Practice OR a Skills module in Sem 1 and ONE 20-credit Research Methods option in Sem 2 from List C. You will also take the compulsory 20cr Topics in History module in Sem 2.

English Lit: Students choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 and ONE 20cr option in Sem 2

OR

History: Students will choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 from History List A and ONE 20cr option in Sem 2 from History List B and EITHER History in Theory in Practice OR a Skills module in Sem 1. You will also take the compulsory 20cr Topics in History module in Sem 2.

English Lit: Students choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 and ONE 20cr option in Sem 2.

Students taking 60cr in History and 60cr in English Lang

History: Students will choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 from History List A AND History in Theory and Practice OR a Skills module in Sem 1. You will also take the compulsory 20cr Topics in History module in Sem 2.

English Lit: Students choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 and ONE 20cr options in Sem 2

OR

History: Students will choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 from History List A and ONE 20cr Research Methods option in Sem 2 from History List C. You will also take the compulsory 20cr Topics in History module in Sem 2.

English Lit: Students choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 and ONE 20cr options in Sem 2

Students taking 40cr in History and 80cr in English Lang

History: Students must choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 from History List A. You will also take the compulsory 20cr Topics in History module in Sem 2.

English Language: Students choose ONE 20cr option in Sem 1 and TWO 20-credit options in Sem 2

All students choose ONE 20-credit option in Semester 1. Students taking 60-80 credits in History may also choose ONE 20-credit option in Semester 2.

History list C: Students taking 60 or 80 credits in History may choose ONE of the following 20-credit Research Methods options in Semester 2:

With the approval of the programme leader students may also take 20 credits of approved modules offered by a School or Department other than History in place of one or two Options on Lists A or B.

Credits must still be evenly balanced across semesters.

These modules count towards History credits.

Students may also apply to undertake a Professional Skills module at level I. If successful this will be taken in place of 20 credits of taught modules. The credits to be dropped will be discussed with the programme convenor. The placement can be taken either during the summer vacation (part-time or full-time) or during semester 1 (part-time only). The placement must be completed prior to the Christmas vacation. Students undertaking a Professional Skills module at level I will not be able to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H.

Students may also apply to undertake a Semester Abroad at level I. This must be undertaken in semester 2. Students undertaking a Semester Abroad must take at least one English Literature option and one History option in semester 1. The third semester 1 module will either be a second English Literature option or History in Theory and Practice.
Students undertaking a semester abroad will not be required to complete the LI core module ‘Topics in History’.
